Am 3. Oktober 2015 präsentierten wir in den Gebäuden der HfG Ulm unseren Sammelband zur Abteilung Information. Einige Ehemalige der Abteilung waren zu Gast: Erdmann Wingert und Gui Bonsiepe (hier seine Vortragsnotizen) haben von ihrer Studienzeit in der Abteilung Information berichtet. Unsere Präsentationsfolien geben einen Überblick über Inhalt und Gestaltung des Buches.

"Die Abteilung Information war mit ihrem Fokus auf verbaler Kommunikation und Informationstheorie eine einzigartige Institution an einer Gestaltungsschule. Sie geht in ihrer Entstehung direkt auf eine nach Ende des Zweiten Weltkriegs geplanten politisch orientierten Hochschule zurück. Dort sollten Journalisten, Politiker und Gestalter für den Aufbau der Demokratie ausgebildet werden. Diese politisch-journalistische Ursprungsidee lebte an der späteren „Hochschule für Gestaltung“ am deutlichsten in der Abteilung Information weiter – als Gegenentwurf zu Propaganda und Manipulation. Bis heute wurde diese kleinste Abteilung der HfG Ulm kaum erforscht und dokumentiert, obwohl sie das intellektuelle Klima an der HfG zeitenweise maßgeblich prägte. Unter anderem durch Gui Bonsiepe, der von 1955 bis 1959 in der Abteilung studierte, hinterließ sie deutliche Spuren in der Designtheorie.
Wie die bereits erschienenen Bände der Reihe, basiert auch dieser auf persönlichen Erinnerungen ehemaliger Studierender der HfG. Ergänzt werden sie durch Beiträge zur Geschichte und Entwicklung der Abteilung, Porträts der Abteilungsleiter Max Bense und Gert Kalow, sowie zahlreiche bisher unveröffentlichte Dokumente und Fotos. Der Band ist somit nicht nur für die Designgeschichte und -theorie relevant, er dokumentiert auch ein spannendes Stück Nachkriegsgeschichte."

My paper on the Information Department at the HfG Ulm has been published in a Spanish design journal. In the same issue: Translations of a 1983 interview with Gui Bonsiepe, and of Donald Norman's debatable article "State of Design: How Design Education Must Change". It contains also an original article about the Ulm "Institut für Umweltplannung" by the editor Eugenio Vega.

The theory behind Auditory Icons and Earcons have been developed in the 1980s, based on a rather restricted understanding of semiotics. With this paper I hope to reveal some common misunderstandings in the conception of the sign-object-relation of everyday sounds and musical motives in computer interfaces.

Im März (2012) erschien dieses Buch über die Kulturgeschichte der Sonifikation — das akustische bzw. auditive Gegenstück zur Visualisierung. In meinem Beitrag geht es um die Anwendung der Semiotik auf auditive Zeichen und die Geschichte der Gestaltung und Rezeption von auditiven Zeichen in Computer-Interfaces. Es ist ein erster Ansatz zur Schließung zweier Theorielücken: der fehlenden semiotischen Fundierung im Auditory Interface Diskurs und um eine bisher nicht vorhandene Audio-Semiotik für nicht-sprachliche Kommunikation.
